What Did We Wear Before There Were 80s Costumes

May 26th, 2010

It is always engaging to see, as we grow older, just how briskly time flies. Here we are, another year is nearly half gone, and soon we’ll be searching for another costume for Halloween, or other party. Have you ever thought about what we wore before there were 80s costumes? Back then, when we were in the eighties, what were our costumes? Did we realize, that our way of dressing ourselves then, would be modified into costumes we only wear during party time, now?

Remember those daft leg warmers? What was the purpose for those things? Yes, the debate can be made that they served to keep the legs of those, who exercised, warm. This is comprehensible however these articles sometimes slid down to the ankles in the first five minutes of an exercise session. Therefore the question remains, how did they keep the legs warm? An individual would spend most of an hour just making an attempt to keep up the leg heaters. Hey, perhaps that is how they kept the legs warm!

What about tight, leather pants, and tight, stone-washed jeans? The large, overpowering, bafflement here, is how in the world did anyone get those things onto their bodies? Was there an obligation that you had to soak in a vat of butter, have a mate get a good distance from you, as he or she held 2 these jeans or pants, run as hard as your small legs could, and taking a blind leap, hopefully slide into these contraptions? When you had them on, did you need to carry about an oxygen tank, just so you could breathe?

Parachute pants! Oh my god, was this the idea of a paratrooper, who jumped out of a perfectly good plane, while he was intoxicated? Did he have the ludicrous concept ( and think it was an epiphany ), as he was free falling, to make a set of pants that will be used more by the break dancing crowd, than anybody else? Did folk really run around thinking, “I must have two those wonderful pants made from parachute material. ”

Fingerless, lace gloves. Yes, it’s correct, that bike riders, and ice fisherman, probably need leather, fingerless gloves to have a good grip as they ride, or use their fishing rods. This is understandable, as they need their fingers unobstructed so they can shift gears or reel in their fishing poles. But , what’s the point of fingerless gloves made of lace? So far as is understood, lace may have a gripping power for roughly all of 2 seconds, but aside from that, what good are they?

Slap bracelets. It’s right that the world probably had a huge lack of bracelets, and a person decided, it was time to fill the world with their presence. You never can say, the state of the nation could have been changed, had enough bracelets been passed around. With these bracelets all you had to do was sneak up to gullible individuals, slap a bracelet on their wrists, and be gone before they realized what had happened. What would we have done without these gadgets?

Whether we agree with it or not, the following generation is going to make fun of our tiny affectations. Back when we were living in the eighties, we wore clothing from the 50’s and sixties as our costumes. Heck, in the nineties, we used clothing from the seventies. It is just the way things are done.

The point being, do not worry, it is all in fun. It has been related that imitation is the sincerest type of flattery. Well, if flattery is being performed, then several people have done an excellent job. Enjoy the wonders of life, and the costumes which are in it.

In Women’s Clothing, Casual Does NOT Equal Sl...

May 26th, 2010

Author: Vered DeLeeuw

Today I’d like to address a common misconception about women’s casual clothing: the notion that if you prefer casual clothes, then you must be lazy, sloppy, and you have probably let yourself go and no longer care about how you look.

Nothing could be further from the truth! Now, it’s true that some types of casual clothes are not very flattering. Some women do wear shapeless T-shirts, baggy sweatpants and other types of clothes that are very comfortable, but also quite unflattering. But the choice to wear casual clothes does not equal a choice to let oneself go. Today, there are so many options when it comes to wearing items that are not just easy, relaxed and comfy – but also look good.

Remember how people used to dress back in the fifties? Well, maybe you don’t remember, but we’ve all seen the photos, and most of us have seen the TV show “Mad Men.” Back then, people used to really dress up – hats, those stiff little woolen suits, pointy shoes with heels… it was beautiful, for sure, but it wasn’t very comfortable. And so, while so many blog posts and articles have been talking about how we have become too casual, how women don’t know how to dress up anymore, I have to disagree. I am actually very grateful to be living in a time when I get to wear clothes that have stretch, that are not rigid, to wear comfy jeans and T-shirts and cute day dresses – I get to be comfortable AND look good.

Because really, it’s not a black-and-white choice between “dressing up” and “being sloppy,” is it? There is such a huge selection out there of casual clothes that are well made, well cut, clothes that are cute and flattering. One of my favorite outfits, the one outfit that I keep reaching out to almost every single day, is jeans and a T-shirt. But the jeans are of high quality. They are dark wash, have stretch, a slight boot cut and a mid-rise. They elongate my legs and flatter my figure.

The T-shirt is not some baggy thing that saw better days, either. I like cute, feminine T-shirts in lively colors that flatter my skin tone, flattering v-necks and cute cap sleeves. Finishing up this casual look; a pair of fresh, modern ballet flats. So you see, this is most definitely a casual outfit and a very comfortable one, but it is in no way sloppy!

Another casual look that has nothing to do with sloppiness: a cute day dress. Especially now that summer is approaching, one of the easiest, most relaxed ways to get dressed is to choose a casual, comfy day dress. You can pair it with leggings and flats, or with cute sandals when it gets really hot. I own this A-line, sixties-inspired dress that I just love. The best thing about it is that it’s made of modern fabrics, so it’s not as rigid as dresses used to be back then.

Look. I’m a mom. I work at home, full time. I’m BUSY. When I go out at night, I like to dress up, but for my daily activities there’s nothing like casual clothing – and they look great – pulled together, stylish and cute. Casual does not equal sloppy!

As we move into the Summer Season it is good to know what the looks of the minute are to ensure that your wardrobe is ready to equipped for every occasion. Summer is a funny season in the UK – you have to be prepared for every eventuality and if you are holidaying in a sunny climate that puts extra pressure on your wardrobe, finding styles that work well for transitioning from planes to warmer climates, popping in and out of air conditioned places and looks that work with hotter days but chilly evenings. As with all wardrobe tips it is best to go for classic looks that will take you seamlessly from one season to the next, as well as having on-trend looks that are both stylish and comfortable. This summer’s on trend look is long. Think sophisticated long though rather than the hippy look of the last few years. Vogue.com has said that the key look for Spring/Summer 2010 is “the long-line dress, the perfect louche layer”. Louche, lounge, relaxed, easy, whatever you like to call this look it is the stylish yet comfortable long dresses which will be a key investment for summer 2010. And it doesn’t stop at dresses either. Think long easy to wear trousers and tunics too. These pieces are also great for the unpredictable UK weather as well as being ideal for hot sunny climates when you want to cover up and yet remain comfortable and stylish. One thing to note also is that if you have any clogs sitting in the wardrobe then this is the time to give them an airing. Fashion footwear is going to be all sensible this summer with lower heels and chunkier clog-inspired footwear. Another key look is the re-emergence of white. White is the new black, according to runway trends hailing from New York Fashion Week. Team with a softer palette of throws and scarves and key statement jewellery to really work the look. The new long line looks are wearable and fuss-free, think simple lines and clean unfussy design. Designers like Calvin Klein with that modern take on the classic tailored trouser or blazer lead the way.

For an example of some of the longer lines on offer go to ME&EM.
